June 2011

We were off to a cool start this season . . . meaning a little slow.  It has picked up the past week or so and some respectable fish are being caught all around the island.   Bluefishing is still good on Chappy.

Some of the bigger fish have been caught on fresh bait or live eels, but plenty have been caught on plugs too.  Darters, bucktails, swimmers and metal have been the preferred lures.

More frequent posts will be on Facebook, Livinit's MV Fishing Reports: http://www.facebook.com/livinitreports.  Take care and hope to see you on the Vineyard

July 26 Report

Still waiting to hear about bonito!  Rumors have been flying around but no confirmed catches yet known.

Bass fishing continues to be sporadic from the beaches.  Some surf casters had some stellar nights at the Breach and Wasque Point, while others came up skunked.  The north shore of the island is also giving up keeper sized bass, but the schools seem to be very localized in certain coves.

Big bluefish are being caught around the Aquinnah cliffs, Philbin Beach, and Squibnocket.  East Beach on Chappy and Vineyard Haven Harbor are also giving up numerous small bluefish day and night.

July 4 Report

Surf fishing is much better on Vineyard shores.  Bass and bluefish, and more importantly, the tides have come around.  What I mean by the tides is that we don't have to head out 2 am this week so we'll be able to function during the daytime for the next few days.

Darters, bottle plugs and Rapalas have been working well in the rips, while needlefish have been the go to plug for "big surf" spots.  There is no shortage of small keeper size bass, and we are now getting reports of bass over 30-pounds, with the occasional 40-pounder being caught.  We just weighed in a nice 41-pounder this morning at Dick's Bait and Tackle that was caught from the surf on a plug.

Head on out people and catch'um up before the summer doldrums kick into high gear.

Bass and Blues
2010.06.16 16:44:31
The tide has turned for the Chappy fishing, meaning the tide is really late this week making an overnight on Chappy the optimal time to fish.  There are bluefish in the rip on the east tide which is compensating for the bass fishing being so late this week.  Chappy still has fish and last week we were averaging 15 keeper sized bass a night EACH and the average size fish was 34" but every forth or fifth fish was 40" or more.  Great fishing, especially considering they're all being caught on plugs.

Bass are still being caught and the North Shore is producing pockets of good fishing.  Tide and conditions most definitely have to be right to get into some of the better quality bass along the North Shore.

Squibbnocket, Philbin and Gay Head has been relatively quiet, but that's not to say it won't turn on any moment.  Lobsterville is still holding keeper sized bass and light tackle and fly fishermen are catching their fare share of fish.

Here's a shot of a client and friend of mine who got into some nice bass fishing last Thursday evening on Chappaquiddick.  He fished for about an hour and landed nearly a dozen bass.

Keeper bass
2010.06.04 04:32:20
A large school of keeper sized bass, 28-40 inch, have inhabited parts of Chappaquiddick.  On a charter last night, June 2, we got into dozens of bass all along East Beach.  White was most definitely the hot color, with soft plastics like the Hogy being the top producing lure of the night.  The biggest fish did come on Super Strike Darters, but quanity came from small plastic swimmers and Hogies.

We were getting hits most casts, and landing fish every 5-7 casts.  The fish were not feeding aggresively, as most of the hook sets were on the top of the head or the bottom of the chin.  Very few fish were hooked in the mouth, which tells me these fish were rolling on the lures, which would account for many of our hits, with no hook-ups.

Either way it was a fun night of fishing, we landed many bass, all loaded with sea lice and had most of the beach all to ourselves.  I'm sure that will change soon as the word has gotten out.

Have fun and please share your experiences on my facebook page, "Livinit's MV Fishing Reports".  Have fun and hope to see you on the beach.

A Bit Slow
2010.05.31 18:24:15
Fishing was a bit slow this week.  I expect the moon tides this week, and abscence of the bait we were seeing last week greatly affected the fishing.  We had few fish weighed in Dick's Memorial Day Weekend Derby and it was not for lack of effort.  We had a large sign up this year and great weather, but few fish.  There is still a few hours left to weigh in fish, but it doesn't look hopeful.

My friend and I fished last night and with only two hits in two hours we walked away frustrated because we had great conditions.  We had a good tide, very little weed, but no fish.  I'm also hearing reports that many of those bluefish that were around last weekend have disappeared, along with the bait.

I'm hoping for a better week this week and I'm sure the Rod and Gun Club is hoping for a better weekend because they are hosting their fly fishing Catch and Release tournament this June 4-6.

Newsflash
2010.04.04 17:36:05
Temps are rising people!  With the bottom water temperature at 45.4 degrees we are only a couple weeks away from the stripers making their way past Martha's Vineyard.  Every April vacation I make my first cast off South Beach in the hopes that the stripers have arrived.  Except for last year, I have caught bass every time from 2003 to 2008.  The water temps were a bit cooler last year, and I am hoping that this year puts me back on par with a spring striper for spring vacation.

Hope you all had a nice winter and to see you on the beach soon.  Look for May's issue of "On the Water" magazine.  I wrote a piece about surfcasting on Martha's Vineyard.  See you on the beach!

Enjoy the off season
2010.01.09 07:35:36

Enjoy the off season everyone.  Remember to get your rods and reels repaired, cleaned and serviced over the winter.

In the meantime, let me know if you come across any good articels or good books.  I'm always looking for new tips and tricks.  Visit some of the fishing expos and many fishing demonstrations put on throughout New England.

Enjoy this time, and in a few months we'll be hard at it . . . listening to our drags sing and clicks of our cameras.  Happy New Year and hope to hear and see you next season.

Almost DERBY Time!!!!!
2009.09.06 23:13:39

Derby Is Only One Week Away!!!

The Martha's Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby is only a week away.  The economy has not affected the derby sponsors because they have just as many prizes as ever and Eastern Boats has stepped up and went from donating a 19' center console to a 24' center console.  The boats looks beautiful and will be a great prize for any shore angler.

Of course you can sign up anytime, but with some good tides early in the derby why wait?  I believe this is going to shape up to be an excellent derby and I predict some very big fish this year.  We've had a good season, but everything seems to be a bit late this year which will bode well for derby contestants.  The shore category will host the coveted prizes this year and I predict more surf fishermen this year than previous derbies.

I will be available for trips during the derby, but I will be limited to nights and weekends because I will be back to school teaching.  I will still be hitting the beach hard so give me a call or drop me an email if you'd like to book a trip and catch the derby winning fish.  Good luck to all and have a great derby!

August 27 Report
2009.08.31 05:43:56
Is this hurricane season or what?  The island is pretty churned up right now.  The water looks like my morning coffee, except for the clumps and clumps of weed and grass.  Fishing is a bit frustrating right now because of the conditions, but if you are willing to stick it out and strip loads of gunk off your barrel swivel and plug, you will be rewarded with a few keepers and possibly a few bass up to 44 inches, as one of my clients found this past Wednesday.  It was very difficult fishing, but we managed to put a few nice bass on the beach and released to fight another day.

False albacore have peeked the interest to many who have taken it easy during the summer doldrums.  It is still early for albies (late for bonito), but some anglers are having great success with these speedy little tuna.  Boaters, of course, are having a better go of it than the surfcaster, but one or two jetty rats and surfcasters have been able to ride a few.  State Beach and Wasque Point would be two good places to wait it out for some albies to move in close enough to put a Maria, Crippled Herring or my buddies new creation, the "Silver Bullet" which can be purchased at Dick's Bait and Tackle.  Good luck and have fun.

Remember, the Derby is only a couple weeks away.  Get over here and get your Derby pin and catch that fish of a lifetime.
